Through all the madness of COVID-19, the hardest part has been watching all of my favorite anime series be put on the back-burner until things can return to some semblance of normalcy. Of course, I hope that everyone stays safe and healthy while we watch the world grapple with this invisible monster.
But, while we're all spending our days trapped inside with friends, family, and significant others (maybe even a pet or two), it's no surprise that we start looking for new shows and series to start. After finishing a recent addition to the Crunchyroll family, "Tower of God", I started looking to see what other series they'd pulled from the web comic app, WEBTOON.
Enter: "The God Of High School".
Holy. Shit. Y'all, if you aren't out there watching this right now, stop what you're doing and pop on the first episode. I promise, you'll go straight to the next.
Originally created by South Korean manhwa, Yongje Park, for the WEBTOON app, it's been running since 2011 and continues to release new chapters up to present day.
Following the story of Jin Mo-Ri, our plucky, happy-go-lucky protagonist, the first episode throws us right into the world with the announcement of the preliminary matches for an anything goes, all-styles, martial arts competition: The God of High School.
As the episode continues, we met an array of interesting characters whom Mo-Ri quickly befriends in an attempt to stop a purse-snatching on the way to the pre-lims. Let me tell you, these action sequences are fantastic. As we watched, it felt like a blend between Devilman Crybaby and Gintama. The humor and action flow together seamlessly and, as to be expected from animation stuido, MAPPA, it just looks great.
Personally, I can't wait to see where the series takes us as viewers and from the following two episodes that have aired since it's premiere, I only have more questions about the world than when I started.
If you're looking for action, comedy, and a touch of the weird, then "The God of High School" should be at the top of your watch list.
